Fitness - The Essential Element
Research has long confirmed that any amount of exercise, at any age, is beneficial. Physical activity is an essential part of any medical weight loss / nutrition program, to maximize your fat loss while keeping valuable muscle mass.
Exercise burns calories, contributing to the overall caloric deficit needed to reduce weight. At the same time, exercise increases the amount of lean body mass (especially resistance based exercises), which burns calories more efficiently and more rapidly than does fat. A higher lean to fat body mass ratio increases metabolism and thereby more calories are burned at rest than for those with a lower lean to fat ratio.
This beautiful synergy is a fundamental element of a successful weight management program. However, in addition to weight loss, exercise has many other health and longevity benefits including aiding in the treatment of certain types of cancer, improving immune function, and more.
- •Heart Disease - Exercise strengthens heart muscle; lowers blood pressure, enhances blood flow and allows your heart to function more efficiently.
- •Stroke - Studies show that regular physical activity reduces the risk of having and/or dying from a stroke or stroke related complication.
- •Type II Diabetes - This type of Diabetes is increasing at alarming rates; by 13.5% between 2005 and 2007. Nearly 24 million Americans suffer from the disease, and many more are at risk.
- •Obesity - Chronic obesity is an epidemic, and a major risk factor for many diseases.
- •Psychological Benefits - While exercising, your body releases endorphins that can improve mood and can assist with coping with stress and warding off depression and anxiety.
A Recipe for Weight Loss Success: A customized plan of Exercise and Diet that works for you!
Exercise alone does effect weight loss; however when combined with a reduced-calorie, nutrient-rich diet, the effects are much more impressive.
Rejuvalife's nutritionist, dietition, exercise physiologist, and behavior therapist work hand-in-hand with Dr. Berger to create a balanced program based on your current weight, metabolic rate, caloric needs, hormone balance or imbalances, level of health and fitness as well as your eating habits and relationship with food. The team incorporates all of this information into a comprehensive diet and exercise program that:
- Is easy to follow and integrate into your current lifestyle. Making healthy choices doesn't have to feel like you're in prison.
- Includes a nutrient-rich menu that won't leave your you or your taste buds feeling deprived.
- Considers your exercise history and fitness level, and ramps up your frequency, duration and intensity of exercise in a way that you feel energized and ready for more, rather than exhausted and in pain. We want you to be able to enjoy the process, not suffer through it.
At Rejuvalife, the support system for your weight management program continues long after you've initiated the changes required or stepped foot on the treadmill for the first time. Once your plan is through the diagnostic and design process, the team helps you begin, gets you through the rough spots, and is there to make modifications and adjustments along the way. We're in it for the "long haul" because you are.
Tips for Your Weight Loss / Nutrition Program
Healthy eating for weight loss and overall health is a combination of balance, variety, moderation and consistency. These tips for good nutrition can help you follow that advice while still enjoying the foods you eat.
- •Enjoy a wide variety of high quality nutrients. You need more than 40 different nutrients for good health, and no single food supplies them all. Your daily food selection should include bread and other whole-grain products; fruits; vegetables; dairy products; and meat, poultry, fish and other high protein foods. Practicing portion control and faith in the concept "you are what you eat" will make the adherence to modifying your diet more palatable.
- •Everything in moderation. If you keep portion sizes reasonable, it's easier to eat the foods you want and stay healthy. The recommended serving size of cooked meat is three ounces, similar in size to a deck of playing cards. A medium piece of fruit is one serving and a cup of pasta equals 2 servings. (A pint of ice cream contains 4 servings.)
- •Feed the machine. Eat regular meals, or several small meals in a day, in lieu of the traditional three larger meals. Skipping meals may seem like a rapid path to weight loss, but quite the contrary. Too few calories lowers the metabolism, which means you burn fewer calories, upsetting the synergy and ultimately lowering your lean body mass and increasing your body fat percentage.
- •Balance your food choices over time. Most find it next to impossible to implement the change to a healthy lifestyle overnight. Gradually modify the behaviors you wish to change, or introduce new habits you wish to establish, to reduce the chances for frustration that giving up favorite foods or habits "cold turkey" may create. Modest changes over time can add up to positive, sustainable eating habits for the rest of your life.
