How Daytime Naps Battle Stress!

Nothing can restore and rejuvinate your mental, emotional, and physical health like sleep can.  With the average sleep duration at an all time low, now almost 2 hours shorter per night than it was 50 years ago.  Sleeping less has been linked to an increased risk of hypertension and cardiovascular problems.  If you suffer from a lack of sleep, you may want to consider adding a 25 minute power nap to your day.  Research shows that napping not only keeps you alert throughout the day, but will reduce stress and improve cognitive functioning.

The Effects of Missed Sleep: Sleep is cumulative; if you lose sleep one day, you feel it the next. If you miss adequate sleep several days in a row, you build up a ‘sleep deficit’, which impairs the following:

  • Reaction time
  • Judgment
  • Vision
  • Information processing
  • Short-term memory

Does Stress Cause Hair Loss? Is There A Cure?

There has been an accidental discovery in the hair-loss department according to the online New York Times.

Researchers from the University of California, Los Angeles and the Veterans Administration were conducting stress-hormone experiments on mice that typically develope complete baldness as a result of being genetically altered to overproduce a stress hormone.  While the experiments were designed to simply study a chemical compound called astressin-B to determine if it would block the effects of stress on the colon.

The scientists treated the bald mice with small doses of the compund for five days, then returned them to cages occupied by several non-bald mice. When the researchers returned to the cages to retrieve the mice for further study, the once-bald mice were indistinguishable from their cage-mates — they had grown back their fur!  The experiments were repeated several time, all with the same results.

Cell Phone Concerns Surface Again!

We’ve heard it before, the radiofrequency and electromagnetic fields emitted by cell phone devices have been shown to affect brain activity.  Still, cell phones are a way of the future; every week there is a new savvy device on the market.  Considering how frequently the generations today use their cell phones, we should pay close attention to the findings of new cell phone studies.

There have been numerous studies performed in the past between cell phone use and brain cancer.  Although the results to these studies have often shown to be inconsistent or inconclusive, new studies have shown cell phones to have an acute effect on our brains.

Researchers have found that holding a cell phone to the ear for an extended period of time increases activity in regions of the brain closest to the antenna.  According to Nora Volkow,…

Dirty Money

Dirty Money is bad for your healthA new test conducted by the Washington Toxics Coalition and Safer Chemicals, Healthy Families has revealed that the plastics chemical bisphenol-A (BPA) is most likely lurking in your wallet. According to the findings, nearly every dollar bill tested in the multi-state analysis revealed BPA contamination, likely from BPA-laden receipts that rub off onto the cash.

The team sampled 22 one-dollar bills from the wallets of people from 18 states and Washington, D.C., and found that 21 of them tested positive for BPA. While some samples contained only about .12 parts per million (ppm) of BPA, others contained up to 11 ppm, indicating that exposure among the population can vary significantly.

Previous studies have already identified that the vast majority of money bills are covered in harmful pathogens and even drug residues, but the new study is one of the first of its kind to…

Snoring is more than just annoying!

snoring health risksIf you snore, have trouble falling asleep, or tend to wake up groggy and tired, a new study suggests that your health may be at risk.

Published on December 1 in the journal Sleep, researchers discovered a connection between snoring and restless sleep to higher risks of metabolic syndrome, which is a group of risk factors for heart disease, stroke and diabetes, defined as having at least three of the following: too much abdominal fat, high triglycerides, low HDL (good) cholesterol, high blood pressure, and high blood sugar.

Loud-snoring adults were twice as likely to develop metabolic syndrome over a three-year period as adults who don’t snore, the study said. Adults who had trouble falling asleep also had an 80 percent higher risk of developing metabolic syndrome than adults who slept better. Wake up tired? You may have a 70 percent higher risk of…

Red wine and longevity!

Why Red Wine?:Red Wine is Healthy!

The benefits of red wine (in moderation) for health have been known for ages. In an effort to understand the ‘French Paradox’ (why French people can indulge in fatty foods but not develop heart disease) red wine came into focus in 1991 on an episode of ’60 Minutes’. Since then, scientists have been feeding components of red wine to mice and other animals in an attempt to understand the full health benefits. Here’s what we know so far:

Flavanoids and Antioxidants:

Red wine is high in flavonoids (a type of polyphenol), which are antioxidants. One of the most studied antioxidants is resveratrol, which comes from grape skins and seeds. Antioxidants help prevent certain molecules, known as free radicals, from damaging cells.

Does red wine prevent cancer?:

Resveratrol helps prevent cancer by limiting tumor growth.

Just being overweight can shorten your lifespan!

A study conducted in Sweden spanning almost four decades has suggested that overweight persons, and not just those who were obese, may also be subjected to increased risk of premature death. It also suggested that the adverse effects of excess weight on mortality may be as significant as smoking cigarettes.

Details and Findings of Study

Published in the British Medical Journal, the study had been conducted using data from Sweden’s military service conscription register, census as well as cause of death register. In all, after excluding certain persons due to incomplete data, 45,920 men were tracked for a period of 38 years; the average age of the men at the start of the study was 18.7 years. During the period, 2,897 of the men passed on.

Body Mass Index and Mortality

Having accounted for age, socioeconomic status, muscle strength and smoking, the researchers found…

The Beauty Benefits of Green Tea?

Green tea is now the preferred drink of supermodels, but is it really any better for you than a good, old-fashioned cuppa?

Clinical evidence suggests that green tea is packed with health and beauty benefits that you can enjoy whether drinking it or applying directly to your skin. Even the leaves can be used as a gentle exfoliant, guaranteed to give your skin a healthy glow.

Recent research shows that green tea extract is naturally rich in antioxidants, which help protect the body from free radicals – naturally occurring particles in the body associated with accelerated ageing and an increased risk of major diseases. Exposure to pollution, smoking and excess sunlight increases the number of free radicals in the blood, but the potent antioxidants found in green tea add strong weight to the belief that green tea not only promotes good health but also…

Weight Loss May Add Years to Your Appearance

Sometimes, skinny isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Often times for those 40 and above, losing too much weight in the face can actually add years to your appearance! Think sunken eyes, droopy skin and large dark circles under your eyes. And the number one effect, emaciated cheeks! According to New Beauty Magazine:

When weight is lost from face, the cheeks are almost always affected. In order for the cheeks to have definition and be prominent, they need fat. A lack of fat makes them look gaunt and sunken. Furthermore, as fat is lost near the cheeks, it causes deep folds between the nose and mouth.

But don’t jump on the pizza train just yet, there are ways to reverse the effects of too much weight loss on the face. Volume loss can be corrected non-surgically with injectables, fillers, collagen
